The enemy of good … better?

Have you noticed how much we are told to be great? To be your best, have your best day ever, your best year ever? What? Best year ever?? I don’t know about you, but I can’t handle the pressure. Be great, do great everyday! What if we were just good enough? What? Sounds absurd doesn’t it? How was your day? Good enough!

I worked with someone who was a surgeon. They tend to be, um, intense! He said the most peculiar thing to me once. He said, the enemy of good is better. I know, that’s what I said, what??? He went on to explain that if a stitch is holding, it’s good enough. Leave it alone. It’s intended to stop bleeding not be the best suture ever. You start messing with it and tissue is going to tear!
How much of our own tissue do we tear trying to be better, to be great? Only to end up living in the regrets of ambiguous greatness?
